The “underperforming and unprofitable” 5km Moscow monorail, begun in 2001 and completed in 2004 at a cost of $US200 million, will probably be closed and dismantled, according to deputy head of the city’s transport department Evgeny Mikhailov. The six-station line links the orange and grey metro lines in the city’s north-east but carries only 10,000 people per day. The project was described in the media as “a pet city hall scheme”.
