MOST GAUTRAIN PASSENGERS ARE FEMALE; 37% ARE BLACK

Nearly 6 million have travelled on Gautrain since the line to Pretoria from Rosebank opened. A survey by Catalyst Research found that 60% of users are women. Security clearly means a great deal: over 400 security guards and 800 cctv cameras are constantly deployed and a security hotline – 0800 811 811 – is available. Less than three incidents of theft per million passengers have been reported since August 2011.
The survey found that 57% of passengers are white or Asian, and 6% are coloured. The fact that only 37% are black tends to confirm widespread criticism of government spending on a project that holds minimal benefit for the majority of South Africa’s population.
