From News24, 18 October:
“The Shosholoza Meyl is running a ‘leaner’ train service supplemented by City to City and Translux buses, the Passenger Rail Agency of SA (Prasa) said on Monday [18 October]. Spokesperson Nana Zenani said in a statement: ‘(There is) a total of 56 trains (sleeper coaches and economy trains), which is over 50% of the planned services, with further plans to ramp-up the service during the high-peak period,’
“This came after Prasa suspended its long-distance train services in August because of a disagreement with Transnet. Transnet accused Prasa of non-payment of about R1.3bn for maintenance work performed, while Prasa’s CEO Lucky Montana accused Transnet of charging too much and doing a poor job in maintaining their locomotives.
“Zenani said the new train services ran from Johannesburg to Durban, East London, Komatipoort and Cape Town and from East London to Cape Town. The services from Johannesburg to Durban, East London and Komatipoort would run every day except for Saturdays, she said. There would be four trips per week on alternate days from East London and Cape Town.
“There was also a weekly economy service from Johannesburg to Cape Town, running on alternative days [sic] and a premier class service running twice a week, Zenani said.”
