SATELLITE SYSTEM FOR NRZ

Posted on 25 April 2010

The National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ) has started installing a satellite communication system along theHarare-Bulawayo railway. Technical services director Lewis Mukwada is quoted saying that $US300,000 has been allocated to replacement of the existing microwave system, which has become obsolete. After completion of this section by the end of 2010, attention will move to other busy routes, such as Gweru-Beitbridge. The number of trains running between Harare and Bulawayo has dropped from ten daily to six, largely due to the unreliable communication system and the fact that radios have a limited range.

It is also planned to restore traction electrification between Harare and Gweru, a project that it is estimated will cost $US30 million.
