NEW TEXAS DMU METRO

Posted on 01 April 2010

The city of Austin in Texas has launched a 51km commuter route operated by six Swiss-built, 200-passenger diesel-electric sets. Capital Metrorail’s Red Line provides nine trips in the morning from Leander to downtown Austin, and and ten return journeys in the afternoon. Speeds up to 96km/h are attained.

The project forms part of the city’s “All Systems Go Long-Range Transit Plan”, which includes expanded bus service, and new and improved park-and-ride lots. During the first week, free rides were offered.
