RAIL INVESTMENT IN NORTHERN ENGLAND

Posted on 01 March 2010 by Railways Africa Editor

Network Rail, the British railway infrastructure authority, has announced a £530 million investment package to improve travel in the north of England through the provision of better stations and quicker, more frequent train services. The Northern Hub study identifies what needs to be done to respond to the significant growth seen in the region. The plan includes a 40% increase in passenger trains operated, totalling 700 extra services per day across the region and increasing the capacity for a further 3.5 million passengers per year. The ten-year plan also includes faster and more frequent services for Newcastle, Liverpool, Manchester, Leeds and Sheffield, as well as a major revamp of Manchester’s Victoria station.
