GAUTRAIN TEST RUNNING TO START
Posted on 22 January 2010 by Railways Africa Editor
Full system trial operating of Gautrain trains is to begin in March on the section between Sandton station and the OR Tambo International Airport. According to spokesperson Dr Barbara Jensen, the Bombela consortium is expected to complete ten-week trial runs here in May.
Although, in terms of the contract, the completion date for the project’s first phase is 27 June, Bombela hopes to bring this date forward by a month, so as to have the line in public service in time for the Soccer World Cup kick-off in June. During January, all electrical and mechanical (E&M) installation work is scheduled for completion, with only some automatic fare collection equipment outstanding. In February, the Gautrain feeder bus system depot at Midrand is to be finished. The stations at the airport, Rhodesfield, Marlboro and Sandton stations are planned for completion before the end of May.
Track installation for phase two should be finished by the end of 2010, as well as power supply and distribution work. The whole of the line from Park station in Johannesburg to Hatfield in Pretoria together with all infrastructure is scheduled for completion in 2011.
