HITACHI RAIL PLANT FOR UK

Posted on 06 December 2009 by Railways Africa Editor

Hitachi is planning to build railway rolling stock in the UK in a deal worth £6.83 billion that would create hundreds of new jobs. The aim is to replace part of Britain’s high-speed train fleet by 2018. Motive power envisaged includes diesel engines charging lithium-ion batteries, with 1,400 hybrid coaches in mind. The company was named earlier in 2009 by the government which wants to replace ageing fleets used on main-lines linking London with the north and west of the country. An agreement is due to be signed by March 2010, but the location of the proposed assembly plant has not been decided yet.
