WILL GAUTRAIN BE RUNNING IN JUNE 2010?

Posted on 06 November 2009 by Railways Africa Editor

“The good news is that, if you ask me today, yes, we can make it,” Gautrain Management Agency (GMA) CEO and Gauteng government Gautrain project leader Jack van der Merwe told Engineering News. He was referring to finishing the airport line in time for the 2010 FIFA World Cup. “At the moment it is technically feasible that we can complete the first phase in time for the World Cup. However, commercially we have not yet come to an agreement.”

The contract with the Bombela consortium stipulates a late June completion date. Bringing the day forward looks like pushing up the price – which already stands at R25.4 billion. A decision on which fairy godmother might pay the difference, whatever that might be, was expected in October but now looks set to surface nearer Christmas.
