REVIVING NIGERIA’S EASTERN LINE

Governor of Nigeria’s Abia State Chris Akomas has appealed to the federal government to expedite rehabilitation of the railway linking Port Harcourt, Abia, Enugu and other cities in the east of the country. He was speaking during the recent handover of the Isiala- Ngwa inland container depot (ICD) to the concessionaires – Eastgate Inland Container Terminal Limited – by the Nigerian Shippers’ Council (NSC) at Avor-Ntigha in the Isiala-Ngwa area of the state.
Reviving the railway, he said, will improve business in the area, and is in fact essential to the efficient functioning of the ICD. Rail is the optimum mode for freighting bulk containers to the dry port for clearing by the owners.
The Isiala- Ngwa depot is one of six approved by the federal government.
There is a need, Akomas continued, to integrate Calabar and its environs in the federal government railway master plan in order to achieve all-embracing connectivity in the south east of Nigeria.
