METRORAIL CANCELS SERVICE TO PREPARE FOR 2010

Cape Town commuters who have to work over weekends have been left stranded without notice because Metrorail cancelled the suburban train service, according to a Cape Argus report. No advance notice was given, no announcements made and no alternative buses provided. The paper was told that maintenance work for the Soccer World Cup in June 2010 was the reason for cancelling trains on 14 November.
“Metrorail was reviewing its weekend and off-peak train service to improve reliability, optimise energy usage, and create capacity for 2010-related maintenance, said spokeswoman Riana Scott.”
The Argus quoted Jean van Rooyen of Muizenberg, who works in Claremont. She said she left work on Saturday 14 November at 17:00 and was left stranded.
“No announcements were made and no signs were up,” she said. “It was only when I phoned the call centre that I was told no trains were running because of 2010-related maintenance. Our working hours are being extended for the festive season, and now we can’t even get home at night.” Scott told the paper: “We have taken note of customer concerns raised, and may make further revisions as a result.”
