The new 2,000km rail network linking the six-nation Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) states is scheduled to start operation in 2017, according to GCC assistant secretary-general Mohammed Obaid Al-Mazroui. Preliminary studies have been completed and approved by GCC leaders. The estimated cost of $US25 billion is to be shared between the member states – Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, Oman, United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Saudi Arabia – calculated according to the length of line in each country. In terms of this, Saudi Arabia and the UAE will be the largest contributors. The
network will extend from the Kuwaiti border with Iraq in the north to Oman in the south.
