$300M SOUGHT TO REDUCE ROAD TRUCKING

Posted on 26 October 2009 by Railways Africa Editor

Six states in the USA – Virginia, Alabama, Mississippi, Tennessee, Pennsylvania and Louisiana – have formed a public-private partnership with the Norfolk Southern Railway to improve the rail network. Virginia, which has already invested $110m, needs to spend $500m. The specific objective is to reduce truck traffic on the congested Interstate 81 highway by 15%. The coalition is seeking $300 million in federal stimulus funds to improve rail lines and terminals If approved, the federal grant would go toward $US2.1 billion in improvements to the existing network of intermodal terminals where freight is transferred between road and rail.
