QUEENSLAND RAIL EXPANSION FOR COAL EXPORTS

Posted on 14 September 2009 by Railways Africa Editor

Important additions to Queensland’s extensive 1,067mm gauge rail network have been commissioned by state premier Anna Bligh. The upgrade of the Jilalan Yard in Central Queensland, which includes major trackwork and improved maintenance and provisioning facilities, will help the coal industry increase exports by more than A$3bn a year and create thousands of new jobs. The expansion of the yard includes 40km of new rail (22km electrified), two new main bypass tracks, two provisioning tracks, new provisioning and maintenance facilities, and a new administration building. The Coal Stream Alliance Jilalan ( CSAJ ), comprising partners QR, McMahon Holdings Limited, MVM Rail, Connell Wagner, Aurecon Hatch (Rail) and Parsons Brinckerhoff, has been formed to undertake the work.
