NEW SWISS METRE-GAUGE STOCK
Posted on 25 September 2009
Current endeavours to extend standard gauge operation in Africa are based on a conviction that metre-gauge inhibits capacity and speed. Instructive examples of what can be achieved on the metre gauge exist in several parts of Switzerland. On17 September, prominent operator Zentralbahn awarded Stadler a SFr141m contract to supply 10 inter-regional electric multiple-units as part of an ambitious double-tracking and modernisation programme.
Four seven-car and six three-car trains will be used on Brünig Line services between Lucerne and Interlaken Ost (74km). More than 20 trains serve this busy route daily, in addition to a number of short workings. The seven-car sets will comprise two three-car units back-to-back, with cabs at the outer ends only and a centre car containing a bistro offering hot and cold food.
Testing of the first set is scheduled for January 2012, with deliveries running from September 2012 to July 2013. They will be in full service from December 2013, allowing for the replacement of stock dating back 40 years.
