MELBOURNE UNDERGROUND EXTENSION

Posted on 20 September 2009 by Railways Africa Editor

A proposed new underground line in Melbourne would link Flinders Street Station with Melbourne Central and continue to Parkville, then join with the Footscray line, to reduce congestion on the north and western commuter routes. An underground station estimated to cost A$100 million is envisaged at Parkville to serve the hospital and university sector. The link would add 14 trains every hour on the Craigieburn, Sunbury, Werribee, Williamstown and Upfield lines – equivalent to 12,000 seats. The proposal forms a key part of a $4.5 billion planned extension, the first new underground line in Melbourne since the city loop was completed 24 years ago.
