ISRAEL RAILWAYS DROPS RAMET

Posted on 25 September 2009

Israel Railways (IR) has cancelled a contract with Ramet Ltd for work on the underground railway station at Binyanei Ha’Uoma in Jerusalem because of the contractor’s renewed financial problems. Ramet stopped work on the project at the end of August and IR foreclosed on a NIS 6 million guarantee that Ramet deposited. In late 2008, Ramet won the tender for excavation and construction work. Built at a depth of 80 metres beneath Shazar Square, the station – which forms part of the Tel Aviv-Jerusalem high-speed railway – is located opposite the Binyanei Ha’Ooma International Convention Centre at the western entrance to Jerusalem, near the central bus station. The platforms are 300 metres in length and the total area occupied is 26,000 square metres.
