CATENARY PROBLEM DISRUPTS LIRR 3RD RAIL LINE
Posted on 07 September 2009
Though New York’s Long Island Railroad (LIRR) uses third rail power, an overhead catenary problem disrupted service on 25 August. LIRR shares tracks with Amtrak and Metro-North trains, both of which use overhead traction supply. Eastbound LIRR trains bypassed the Woodside, Forest Hills and Kew Gardens stops until temporary platforms could be brought into use. Passengers were diverted to the subway, which accepted LIRR tickets.
