UGANDA & RITES

At a recent meeting in India, minister of state for railways K H Muniyappa promised visiting Ugandan minister of state for urban development U Tibamanya all possible assistance in developing integrated rail services in his country. He said that Rail India Technical and Economic Services Ltd (Rites), a public sector undertaking under the ministry of railways and a leading international transportation consultant with operational experience in over sixty countries in the Middle East, Africa, South East Asia and Latin America, would continue to help Uganda in the development of railways.

Rites undertook training for 20 personnel from the Uganda Railways during the period 1985-1995 and was also responsible for the Kampala Urban Traffic Improvement Plan (KUTIP), funded by the World Bank, following international competitive bidding in 2001-02. Rites undertook consultancy services for design review, tender assistance and construction supervision in strengthening 53.5km of the Kikorongo-Katunguru and Equator Roads in terms of a World Bank funded contract, completed successfully in 2007.
