To date, 20 class 18E electric locomotives (E18-401/420) have been repainted in Shosholoza Meyl livery. Transnet Rail Engineering (TRE) is currently upgrading a further 100 class 6E1 units to 18E configuration. These are being turned out in the new Transnet Freight Rail orange.

There are presently four complete Premier Classe train sets in operation, Ashley Peter reports – one each for the routes Johannesburg-Cape Town, Cape Town-Port Elizabeth, Johannesburg-Durban and Johannesburg-Hoedspruit. A fifth set, to act as a spare, is being prepared at TRE.

oh what a lovely train.the seats the toilets teh friendly staff to mention a few

  2. Hmmm… What about the Class 7Es used to haul the train over the Kimberley, De Aar, Beaufort West section? Will they receive purple livery?

  3. Deon Irish says:

I trust they’re doing a couple of diesels for the Cpt-PE route.

When I came back from PE on the 19th July, the diesels were not switched at Worcester but took the train right through to Cape Town.

I did a circular trip Cpt-Jhb; Jhb-Dbn; and (after flying to PE) PE-Cpt. All three trains were excellent value for money, with clean comfortable facilites and tremendous staff. They deserve widespread tourist support.

(p.s. They don’t quite run on time – the Jhb leg was accurate to the minute, but we arrived early at both Dbn and Cpt! Unforgivable!!!

  4. Willie de Beer says:

Very colourful. Hope they can keep them clean and shiny, inside and outside.

  5. Johan says:

The paint job on the body is well done. Now for the maintenance & upgrade on the inside as well!
Breakdowns on this new colourful loco’s are fairly common.

  6. Shall Ford says:

The purple and gold livery of the rebuilt 18E class is most unusual and very nice!
