KROONSTAD MOTIVE POWER
Posted on 17 August 2009 by Railways Africa Editor
Unconfirmed reports suggest that motive power allocations at Kroonstad, midway depot between Germiston (203km) and Bloemfontein (205km), are being reduced, with driving staff being transferred to alternative bases. Other staff have resigned, to work instead for Rail Road Logistics (RRL), the Grindrod group associate company involved mainly in ore haulage in the Welkom area (about 50km south-west of Kroonstad).
During the Conferations Cup season in Gauteng during June, the temporary transfer of several Kroonstad-based diesel locos to Johannesburg, reportedly to work special passenger trains, resulted in a motive power shortage and the cancellation of freight trip working from their home depot.
