The current passenger train service train from Baramulla to Anantnag in Kashmir (101km) is to be extended 18km to Qazigund shortly. The commissioner for railway safety (CRS) is expected to inspect the line during the first week of August. This will be followed by a speed test.

It has taken almost nine years to complete the Baramulla-Qazigund project, on which work started in 2000. The cost is estimated at Rs 3,200 crores. There are about 113 minor and major bridges along the route. The longest is 435 metres, over the Veith River, followed by the 300 metre Sandran bridge.

The first railway in Kashmir, the 66km Anantnag-Mazhom line, was opened in October 2008. In February 2009, the 35km Mazhgom-Baramulla section was inaugurated.
