ISRAELI PASSENGER PROJECTIONS

Israel Railways expects to carry more than 37 million passengers IN 2009 – 5% more than the 35.1 million in 2008, and up eight times on the 4.3 million in 1994. The government has allocated $US7.25bn for railway development over the next three years. The work to be done includes completion of the line from Tel Aviv Hahagana to Rishon Le-Ziyyon West by 2011-12, and to Plashet on the route to Ashqelon by December 2012. Track doubling from Tel Aviv to Kefar-Sava is scheduled for completion by June 2010, the Ramla-Be’er Sheva doubling and realignment by March 2011 and the Qiryat-Motzkin-Nahariyya doubling by September 2011. Around $1bn is to be allocated for new rolling stock.
In terms of a $12.5bn investment programme for the period 2012-20 announced by Prime Minister Benyamin Netanyahu, rail links are to be built from Metula near the Lebanese border in Upper Galilee to Eilat on the Red Sea, and the portion of the old Hedjaz Railway between Haifa and the Jordanian border is to be revived.
