TRANSNET WAGE BILL UP
Posted on 27 July 2009 by Railways Africa Editor
At the end of June, Transnet reached agreement with the South African Transport and Allied Workers’ Union (Satawu) and United Transport and Allied Trade Union (utatu) on a 7% across-the-board wage increase which will cost about R750 million. Labour costs, Transnet said recently, represent about half the group’s total costs, which stand at R20bn. Spokesman John Dludu, noting that agreement was reached without a strike, was quoted explaining: “We believe that this is a balanced and fair deal given the performance of the company under the prevailing economic conditions.” According to Satawu general secretary Randall Howard, who pointed out that Transnet initially offered a zero percent increase in exchange for protecting jobs: “It is a deal we can live with.” He conceded that wage negotiations are difficult at present, in view of the recession.
