REVIVE TAZARA – INDUSTRIALIST

Posted on 24 July 2009 by Railways Africa Editor

Zambia and Tanzania have been urged to devise measures that will resuscitate the operations of the Tanzania-Zambia Railway (Tazara), to ease pressure exerted by trucks on the Great North Road. Zambia International Trade Fair (ZITF) chairman Phesto Musonda made the appeal in Ndola at the official opening of the 45th fair. Investing in rail, he said, can prolong the lifespan of the road infrastructure.

“Apart from the ability to move bulky goods at relatively cheaper tariffs,” the Zambia Daily Mail reported him saying, “we all appreciate that rail is also environmentally friendly and fuel-efficient.” He recalled that the recent multilateral workshop held in Lusaka on the Southern African Railways Association corridor underscored government’s commitment to improving rail transport in the region. Regional competitiveness of the Southern Africa Development Community (Sadc) would only be enhanced if railway companies improved their performance.

Countries represented at the trade fair included China, Tanzania, South Africa, Iran, Pakstan, Nigeria, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Zimbabwe, Egypt and Kenya. New entrants this year were Indonesia, Japan and Ghana.
