GHANA TO REVAMP RAIL

Posted on 20 July 2009 by Railways Africa Editor

The government has released a total of $US2 million to the management of Ghana Railways Company (GRC) for revamping the western rail line, its main source of revenue. This was disclosed by minister of transport Mike Hammah during a meeting with the company’s employees. He added that upgrading the Accra-Tema line is a major government priority.

Hammah also revealed that consultants have started work on a thorough study of the company’s problems, and are to make recommendations in due course. An interim report has been submitted already. The government, he said, sees the transport sector as the only means by which the country could achieve the “Middle Income Status.” He advised the management to provide a transparent administration, and to involve the workers in the running of the company. During question time, the workers appealed to the government to increase their salaries by 100%. Responding, Minister Hammah told the workers that their Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) will soon be reviewed, with a view to finding a solution to their wages and salaries problems.

Deputy minister Dzifa Attivor assured the workers that government is aware of their pains regarding their salaries, and said everything possible is being done.
