GAUTRAIN 65% DONE

Posted on 19 July 2009 by Railways Africa Editor

According to Gautrain Management Authority chief executive officer Jack van der Merwe, speaking during a media site visit to Marlboro on 2 July, 65% of the construction work has been completed, and R17.5 billion of the budgeted R25.1 billion has been spent. Only one kilometre of tunnel remains to be finished.

The project is on budget except for an additional R300,000 which has to be paid in because the projected inflation rate on which the budget was based was 4.5-5%, whereas the actual present rate is between 8 and 8.5%.

Two completed coaches are being delivered by Union Carriage and Wagon in Nigel every week.
