Tunnelling works on the first two lines of the $US4 billion Dubai metro first phase are complete. The 52km Red Line from Jebel Ali Free Zone to Rashidiya includes 4.7km of bored tunnels between Port Saeed and Jujurman stations. The Roads and Transit Authority (RTA) says around 90% of construction is complete, with most remaining work focused on depots, stations, emergency exits, and access roads. More than 40 trains supplied by Kinki Sharyo, Japan, have been delivered to Jebel Ali depot, and testing is already under way on some sections of the line, due to begin operations on 9 September.
The 23km Green Line from Health Care City to Al Nahda Street includes 7.9km of tunnels. Construction work is currently around 55% complete according to the RTA and the project is on schedule for a March 2010 opening.
