CONCERN OVER GHANA RAIL REPAIRS

Ghanaian minister of transport Mike Hammah says he is disappointed with the lack of progress in rehabilitation work on rail lines at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle in Accra. During an inspection on 14 July, he suggested that the Ghana Railways Company (GRC) should complete minor repairs immediately so that the route could be usable for commuter service. Major rehabilitation, he said, can be deferred till later.
“These rail lines are very busy and their ineffectiveness will affect workers and other economic activities,” he explained to reporters.. He warned squatters not to encroach on the railways reserve, pointing out that their lives could be at risk in the case of a derailment. A train from Nsawam to Accra derailed at the circle on 10 July, due to the state of the track. GRC deputy managing director Ato Botwe promised that the necessary work would be completed in two weeks at an estimated cost of 10,000 cedis.
[ Our conversion table says 10,000 cedis equal 1 US dollar, but surely that can’t be right. – editor
