ROMANIA LAYS OFF WORKERS

Posted on 04 June 2009 by Railways Africa Editor

Societatea Najionala a Cailor ferate Romane (CFR), the Romanian national railway, is to lay-off 3,700 workers – all approaching retirement age – in terms of an agreement reached between the country’s transportation ministry and railway trade unions. Bonuses for another 4,000 are to be “slashed”. Transport Minister Radu Berceanu is quoted saying that without the reduction in bonuses, it would be necessary to retrench 8,000 people altogether. President of the commercial movement federation Gheorghe Popa says the agreement reached is not satisfactory, but necessary considering the situation in which CFR finds itself.
