RBCT appoints new CEO

Richards Bay Coal Terminal has announced that Raymond Chirwa, its current chief operating officer, will take up the position as chief executive officer on the retirement of the current CEO Terry Howarth.

The appointment is effective from 1 July 2009. Mr Howarth will remain an executive director of RBCT until his retirement date of 31 December 2009.

Commenting on his appointment, Mr Chirwa said, “I am very happy to accept the challenge of leading one of the single largest coal exporting terminals in the world and that the foundation laid down by Mr. Howarth will be built on as RBCT continues to excel in these difficult economic challenges.”

A qualified engineer, Chirwa has 18 years’ experience as an electrical and mechanical engineer. He joined RBCT in 2004 as the general manager engineering. He was transferred to general manager operations in January 2008 before being promoted in July 2008 to chief operating officer.

Prior to joining RBCT, Mr Chirwa worked for ESKOM for six years.
