KHAYELITSHA EXTENSION OPEN
Posted on 17 June 2009
The 4.5km extension beyond Cape Town’s Khayelitsha station opened to traffic on 9 June. It is not intended to run trains through to the city until new timetables come into force in October, as considerable rescheduling is involved. Until then, a shuttle service will be in operation during the off-peak between Khayelitsha and the end of the line at Kuyasa, near Baden Powell Drive. An additional intermediate station named Chris Hani has been provided to serve the areas of Nkanini and Makhaza.
While the new facility has been generally welcomed, not everyone is happy about it – according to a report in West Coast News. “Nkanini resident Nobuze Katima said before the line was built, residents had been able to use illegal electricity connections to a neighbouring suburb, but that the train line had stopped this practice. She said the community was also unhappy because cleaners at the station were not from the area.”
