FATAL DRC DERAILMENT

Posted on 13 June 2009

“At least” 10 people died and 29 were hurt when one train ran into another and derailed between the towns of Tenke and Tshilongo in the province of Katanga, Société Nationale des Chemins de fer Congolais (SNCC – the state railway in the Democratic Republic of Congo) told Associated-France-Presse. The company attributed the accident to the state of the track, which it said had not been replaced for 40 years.

[ Tenke, 237km north of Lubumbashi, is the junction where the line westwards to Kolwezi and Angola leaves the main north-south line running from Ilebo to Lubumbashi – and eventually Cape Town. – editor

Quibbling, but this incident appears to be a Collision, which became a derailment, rather than the other way around.
