CAPE TOWN STATION UPGRADE

Posted on 17 June 2009

Cape Town’s main station is being transformed into a “world-class transport and tourism hub,” according to key project people quoted in the press. “Phases 1 and 2 of the multi-million revamp, including the upgrading of the Strand and Adderley Street retail and food court, is fast nearing completion, while phases 3 and 4, which include the reconstruction of the station forecourt and the completion of the Old Marine Drive retail component, are expected to start in the next two months. Altogether, the 2010 Fifa Soccer World Cup will leave a R8.5 billion transport infrastructure legacy in the city.”

The architectural fabric of Cape Town has drastically changed over the years.Iconic structures have sprung up and these compete with structures in the first world. One hopes that Cape Town railway station eventually becomes an International Transport Hub.I hope the Design Team has allowed for expansion to cater for local and International Rail traffic.Local Rail Traffic includes the introduction of Rail-link to (Robben Island City and Pringle Bay via Cape Town Nature Reserve)The two proposals formed part of my Inspirational International Railway Projects created on christmas eve 2008.International Rail Traffic will involve Cape Town – Cairo and World Rail Corridor 1 from Cape Town – Europe via Chrostopher Columbus Bridge at Rock of Gibraltar.

I’m very impressed that the Cape Town station are being upgraded, just one problem with the upgrade.
So many of us make use of it, elderly people, ladies that have to have a corporate look (high heels) and i’m one of them. What were you thinking when you decided on those TILES, surely you are not users of the station. Can you imagine how severely you can injure yourself there. Is there a possiblity that you can some how sandpaper that tiles to give it a rough look? Just take a walk through the station in peak hours and see for yourself how people are running to make their train in time, to get home to their families. Feel free to reply.

Hi. I am so glad that Cape Town Station is being upgraded. It is well about time too. As Cape Town is such a beautiful city, and when tourist come to this city, they are taken away by our infrastucture in this amazing city. When it comes to our train station, it is not such a nice impresion we leave. As this station is the heartbeat of the city, the upgrade comes well in need for our city. The only question, why did we have to wait for a sporting event to get this ball rolling?
