CABLE THEFT HITS TFR

Posted on 13 June 2009 by Railways Africa Editor

On 5 June, Transnet Freight Rail (TFR) spokesman Sandile Simelane told the press that cable theft had resulted in the cancellation of several trains carrying coal from Mpumalanga to Richards Bay. “If consignments fail to reach their international destinations on time, the country’s reputation will suffer as global markets will view SA as unreliable and inefficient,” Simelane said, adding that the affected trains had been rescheduled to recover the lost traffic.
Cable theft in the Ermelo-Ogies region of Mpumalanga has seriously disrupted traffic to and from the coal terminal during the past two months, though several syndicates have been broken and arrests made. Apart from the cost of replacing cables, “locomotives and wagons can cost the company millions of rand in repairs and replacement”, Simelane said.
