TAZARA APPOINTMENT

Posted on 14 May 2009 by Railways Africa Editor

On 5 May, Zambian communications and transport permanent secretary Mukuka Zimba, in a statement issued in Lusaka, explained that the appointment of Henry Chipewo as the acting managing director for the Tanzania-Zambia Railway Authority (Tazara) is on an interim basis, pending the appointment of substantive officers “through an open and transparent system”.

During April, the Tazara board recommended to the council of ministers that the positions of managing director and deputy be advertised. The council approved the immediate advertisement of the two positions, in line with the specifications of the Tazara Act.

The auditor-general’s office in Zambia and an audit enquiry team from Tanzania, in separate audits of Tazara, found that the company had been “grossly” mismanaged. The findings led to the dismissal of managing director Clement Mwiya and the retirement of his deputy in August 2008.
