SENA LINE OPEN TO SENA

According to the Maputo daily “Noticias”, Mozambique’s Sena line from Beira is now open for freight traffic as far as the town of Sena (320km), on the south bank of the Zambezi. The 3.67km Dona Ana rail bridge over the Zambezi between Sena and Mutarara, which was sabotaged in 1985, has been rebuilt, and reconstruction work on the line has advanced about 100km north of the bridge, in the direction of Moatize. The 44km branch line to Malawi has not been tackled yet, as considerable work is needed on the Malawian side of the border. Nothing has moved on this line to the Malawian town of Nsanje for more than two decades. The company holding the lease on the entire central Mozambican rail system, the Beira Railroad Company (CCFB), has been repairing coaches to permit resumption of passenger service from Beira to Marromeu – hopefully by August 2009.
