SANDSTONE | 123 narrow gauge wagons

Posted on 08 May 2009

Sandstone Estates won a tender to purchase 123 narrow gauge wagons from the Port Elizabeth-Avontuur line that were up for sale recently. It acquired one the old steam-operated breakdown cranes sold but the others – except for a single Rovos purchase – went to scrap-metal dealers. Sandstone did however persuade Reclaim to resell spares from cranes they were cutting, also two spare boilers. These have gone to Reefsteamers.  Wilf Mole told Stewart Currie, editor of the Railway Society’s Gauteng On Track Newsletter:

“Unfortunately there was a very high cost attached to this but I guess the scrap dealer holds all the cards once he has purchased the asset.”
