This month, during which South Africa’s enterprising luxury excursion operator Rovos Rail celebrated its twentieth anniversary, three fifty-year-old electric locomotives which have been purchased arrived at the group’s Capital Park, Pretoria, base. Altogether sixty 2,200hp class 5E units entered service between 1955 and 1959, seeing use on all 3kV DC lines in South Africa, in the Western and Northern Cape, Natal and Transvaal. From 1959, they were joined by the improved class 5E1 (2,600hp) and were gradually displaced after 1970, when the 6E (3,340hp) made its appearance.
