Bahrain plans to spend billions of dollars redeveloping its transport infrastructure, including the construction of a $US7.9 billion monorail network, the Works Ministry announced on 25 May. The target completion date is 2030, Bahrain’s Gulf Daily News reports.

Works Minister Fahmi al-Jowder says the ministry has completed preliminary studies for the project. “We now want to go into the second phase of the consultancy study,” he was quoted saying.
“It will give us the alignment, how to finance and how to implement a monorail based on six lines. We haven’t started the second phase of the consultancy study – this will begin depending on financing.”

The ministry said the redevelopment of the transport network, which will span 180km, would also include light rail, trams and buses, as well as new traffic management equipment.
