GAUTRAIN TUNNEL 90% COMPLETE

Posted on 14 May 2009 by Railways Africa Editor

According to Gautrain spokesperson Dr Barbara Jensen, more than 90% of the 15km Gautrain tunnel section is complete. The underground portion extends from Johannesburg’s Park station, running beneath the Johannesburg hospital, Parktown Ridge, Rosebank and Sandton, emerging on the surface at Marlboro. Three kilometres were excavated using the specially imported, German-made tunnel-boring machine (TBM). For the remainder, traditional drill-and-blast methodology is being employed.
