BLACKPOOL TRAM CONTRACT

Bombardier Transportation to supply 16 five-section, three bogie, low-floor trams to the Blackpool Council, the only city in the UK that never discontinued tram operation. Each of the new fleet, 32.5m long and 2.65m wide, is to be built at the Bautzen plant in Germany. Delivery is to begin in May 2011 and operation will take place alongside the vintage units, once some 8km of track is replaced A £20m depot is planned at Starr Gate. Most of the funding for the £100m revitalisation project is coming from the Department for Transport.
