SENA LINE NEARLY DONE

Rehabilitation of Mozambique’s 590km Sena line north of Beira is expected to be finished in September 2009, according to a World bank official quoted by Reuters. The $US200 million project was more than half funded (to the tune of $104.5 million) by the bank. The balance comes from the CCFB consortium, consisting of Caminhos de ferro do Moçambique (CFM – the state railway & harbours), with a 49% shareholding, and Rail India Technical and Economic Services Ltd (Rites) and Ircon, with 51%. Opening to general traffic will probably take place in January 2010.
As coal mining at Moatize is projected to require greater capacity than the line can handle, further upgrading is envisaged in due course. Estimates suggest that between $US250 and 280 million will be needed for improvements sufficient to move 12 million tonnes per annum. The Brazilian company mining at Moatize will be able to produce 11 million tonnes.
