KENYA-ETHIOPIA-SUDAN-RWANDA RLY
Posted on 09 April 2009
On 2 April, as part of part of Kenya’s official economic blueprint Vision 2030, the government invited bids – due by 18 May – for the carrying out of a feasibility study into a proposed new transport corridor, including a 1,435mm gauge railway running from a planned new port at Lamu to Addis Abeba in Ethiopia and from there past Lake Turkana to Juba in the Sudan. Ultimately the line is foreseen as ending at Kigali in Rwanda. The successful bidder is expected to advise on regulatory issues and to propose at least three investment models, together with costs and financing options.
In December 2008, Kenya announced it was negotiating with Qatar for a $3.5bn loan to build a new port at Lamu, situated on the north-eastern coast south of Somalia.

In March 2010, the narrow gauge line to Wau reopened after being closed due to damage in the civil war.
Wau is the nearest railway station to Juba, though the shortest route would bypass Wau.
