NOT ALL STATIONS IN DUBAI

Posted on 12 March 2009 by Railways Africa Editor

When the 52km Red Line of the Dubai Metro opens to traffic in September, trains may not stop at all stations because some of the construction work might not have been completed. The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) blames private contractors for falling behind schedule.

The main contractor for the Red Line is a consortium led by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) but station construction was sub-contracted. A Reuters report quoted director-general of the Dubai Department of Finance Nasser Al Shaikh saying that though several contractors on the Metro project had not been paid on time, all accounts had been settled by February.

The Red Line, running between Rashidiya and Jebel Ali on Shaikh Zayed Road, is to have 29 stations – 24 elevated, four underground and one at ground level. A fleet of 700 buses is to provide feeder service to the stations. The largest of three “park and ride” stations being provided will be near the Ibn Battuta Mall. Here 6,000 spaces will be available.
