NIGERIA’s WARRI LINE
Posted on 16 March 2009
A sum of N6 billion has been provided in Nigeria’s 2009 budget for completion of the remaining 27km of the Ajaokuta-Warri railway. The project has been at a standstill since 2005, and it is understood that monies are still owing to the contractor, Julius Berger. Minister for Transport Alhaji Ibrahim Bio announced the resumption of the work when he met Deputy Governor of Delta State Professor Amos Utuama during a recent visit.
The press quoted him saying: “I want to emphasise that the project was abandoned perhaps due to the non-payment of the contractors since 2005 but in the wisdom of President
Umaru YaríAdua he wants to complete this project under his 7-point agenda.”
[ The line is being constructed on 1,435mm gauge, the sole example in Nigeria. All other lines in the country use 1,067mm. – editor Railways Africa
