According to a 6 March report from Kolkata, India, Coal India Limited (CIL) is considering a proposal to join the Ircon International and Rites-led consortium, currently constructing and rehabilitating the railways of Mozambique. Both Rites and Ircon are subsidiaries of state-owned Indian Railways.
It is understood that the consortium, in which Rites and Ircon jointly hold 51%, approached CIL recently with a suggestion that it take a participatory stake in the Beira Railway Company. This is presently rehabilitating and upgrading the 590km Sena line, together with the port of Beira (at an estimated cost of $US440 million) to carry 12 million tonnes of coal annually.
