R170 BILLION FOR S A TRANSPORT

Speaking at a news conference on 23 November, Transport Minister Jeff Radebe said government is spending R170 billion on transport improvements to meet the needs of an estimated 450,000 visitors during the 2010 Fifa Soccer World Cup. The amount includes funds allocated  for airport and roads upgrades and the creation of new rail and bus systems. “We are driven by a desire to make sure that South Africa becomes a destination of choice for tourists and business. The World Cup in 2010 is a catalyst for the development of our system because we need to meet Fifa requirements,” Radebe was quoted saying.

R13.6 billion from the overall budget has been allocated to cities hosting World Cup matches. There are to be10 venues for the finals in nine locations.

An integrated ticketing system for visitors is to be introduced for  several types of transport, including rail, buses and minibus-taxis. The number of railway police will increase from 1,400 to 5,000 by 2010 and other security measure are to be introduced for the safety of visitors.
